Research participant introduction

Dear participant,

You are invited to participate in a PhD research project about managers’ experiences with product innovation projects. Participation is voluntary and confidential. The project title is: ‘Strategic project management for product innovation’.

The aim is to increase project management practitioners’ understanding about how strategic project management and project strategy can be used to i) successfully navigate the often uncertain and unpredictable product innovation project journey and ii) increase the likelihood of commercial product innovation success. You are invited to participate in the research project because of your involvement in product innovation projects.

This research project examines and verifies the concepts and relationships within a theoretically deduced Strategic Project Management (SPM) framework and supporting models. The SPM framework integrates strategic management, business management and project management approaches to help project managers steer product innovation projects efficiently and effectively over the project life cycle. The research will contribute to the practice of product innovation management by providing improved frameworks and approaches for managers to identify appropriate tools and techniques to manage their product innovation projects strategically. The resulting SPM framework and approaches can then be used to educate project managers about how strategic project management and project strategy contribute to successful product innovation projects.

Participating project managers are direct beneficiaries of the research. The research project offers project management participants the opportunity to increase self-awareness and reflect about past projects. This will be achieved through the questionnaire and subsequent follow-up interview through a process of appreciative inquiry. Following the interview, participating project managers have the opportunity to discuss the latest developments in regards to the research topic.

Participation involves completion of an online consent form and online questionnaire estimated to take no longer than 45 minutes to complete and a subsequent follow-up interview. The follow-up interview can be conducted online. The follow-up interview will be arranged at a time convenient to you and will take no more than 60 minutes.

Your input is very important to me and will be kept strictly confidential and used only for the purpose of research for this project. A link to the online consent form and questionnaire is provided on this website.

Instead of sending supporting documents to you as research participant via email, I have created this website that introduces the research project and the questionnaire.

As a research participant it is important that you have a look at the documents available in the ‘black menu’ column to the left of the website. They are for your perusal in the order of:

  • Research participant introduction.
  • Research participant information sheet.
  • Research participant questionnaire.

The research questionnaire is accessed when you click on the image of the questionnaire on the website page. A new tab opens up with the questionnaire. There are 40 questions of which 35 are mandatory. To help you with the meaning of some of the terms used in the questionnaire I have added pages with concept definitions and model illustrations on the website. When you click on the images on these pages they will enlarge making it easier for you to page through. These are also available in the ‘black menu’ column to the left of the website:

  1. Project strategy concept definitions.
  2. Project process illustrations.
  3. Project strategy style definitions.
  4. Project methodology illustrations.
  5. Project strategy concept definitions.
  6. Project strategy tool illustrations.

Once you have completed the questionnaire, you are of course welcome to explore the articles on the website about strategic project management for product innovation.

Thank you very much for the kind assistance.
